Croydon fire: Dozens of firefighters battle blaze at abandoned building

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze at an abandoned building in Croydon in the early hours of this morning.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters rushed to a fire at a disused building on Sydenham Road, in Croydon, south London, this morning (Monday, August 1).

Firefighters tackled the blaze at a five-storey disused residential block of flats, which was under refurbishment.

One man left the building before emergency services arrived and was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics.

A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said: “The brigade was called at 4.21am and the fire was under control by 5.33am.

“Fire crews from Croydon, Woodside, Norbury and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.”

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
