Highgate fire: Tube station closed as firefighters tackle blaze

Highgate Tube station is temporarily closed and people are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Highgate Tube station has been closed as firefighters tackle a huge blaze at a building on Archway Road in Hornsey.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are battling with the fire that has set half of the first floor of the derelict building alight.

Sarah Jayne Palmer, posted a photo on Twitter saying that the fire is close to Highgate Wood.

“It’s so sad watching trees burning,” she wrote.

London Fire Brigade were called at 3.01pm on Tuesday May 2 and said they received 25 calls about the incident.

Fire crews from Hornsey, Kentish Town, Holloway, West Hampstead and Finchley are attending the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Highgate Underground station at 3pm today following reports of a fire.

“Officers are on scene supporting the London Fire Brigade as they work to extinguish the fire and establish the circumstances of how it started. The station is closed and passengers are advised to avoid the area.”
