Similar events including Hogmanay in Edinburgh have been cancelled due to UK weather warnings. Thousands of people will be heading to the capital tonight to watch Big Ben countdown to midnight.

The annual London New Year’s Eve firework display will go ahead as planned tonight (December 31st.)

Spectators are concerned the event will be cancelled due to Met Office weather warnings.

It is unlikely the event, which is attended by thousands of people from across the UK, will be called off at such short notice.

Yesterday, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan issued an urgent warning ahead of the New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

After major disruption at last year's event, Londoners were warned against scam ticket sales.

The event is now sold out and the only legitimate resale tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

The Mayor’s office also said it is monitoring the weather ahead of tonight’s event. Winds of up to 40mph are expected to batter the capital before midnight.

According to The Standard, organisers are reportedly sweating after similar celebrations in Edinburgh and Blackpool have been cancelled due to the weather.

At the time of publishing the annual London New Year’s Eve firework display will go ahead as planned.

A weather warning for high winds will come into force on New Year’s Day at 9am, until 6am on January 2nd.

It's 25 years since London's first New Year's Eve fireworks display, a celebration that has become such a staple it's now shown across the globe.

Met Police officers have said London will be exceptionally busy tonight and have advised planning your journey home.

There will be a visible police presence across the city tonight, including police stewards who will be monitoring crowds.
