Streatham shooting: Man shot dead by armed police named

A man shot dead by armed police in Streatham, south London, has been named locally as drill rapper Chris Kaba.

Mr Kaba, who is in his 20s, was shot in Kirkstall Gardens in Streatham Hill shortly before 10pm on Monday (September 5) after police officers used “tactical contact” to halt his suspect vehicle.

Paramedics and the air ambulance were called out and police administered first aid.

Mr Kaba was taken to hospital, where he died at 12.16am.

The rapper was known as Madix and part of the MOBO-nominated drill group 67.

It is believed he was engaged and was months away from becoming a father.

Enquiries are ongoing to notify his next of kin, and cordons and road closures are in place.

The Met Police has referred itself to the force watchdog over the incident, which involved specialist firearms officers.

A Met spokesperson said: “Enquiries into the exact circumstances are ongoing.”

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) were contacted and they notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) just after 11pm on Monday night.

Watchdog investigators launched an independent inquiry shortly before midnight.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “At this early stage it is believed a man was fatally shot during the police response to reports of a suspect vehicle.

“Investigators were sent to the scene and post-incident procedures to start gathering evidence.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all of those affected by this terrible incident.

“Our investigation remains in the very early stages.”
