Streatham shooting: Man dies after being shot by armed police in south London

A man in his 20s has died after being shot by armed police in Streatham Hill, south London, following a pursuit.

The Met Police has referred itself to the force watchdog over the incident, which involved specialist firearms officers.

A vehicle, which the force said was “suspect”, was being pursued by police in the Lambeth area at around 9.51pm yesterday (Monday, September 5).

Officers stopped the vehicle “following tactical contact” in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill, where a police firearm was discharged.

A man believed to be in his 20s - who was inside the vehicle - sustained a gunshot injury.

Paramedics and the air ambulance were called out and police administered first aid.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died at 12.16am.

Enquiries are ongoing to notify his next of kin, and cordons and road closures are in place.

A Met spokesperson said: “Enquiries into the exact circumstances are ongoing.”

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) were contacted and they notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) just after 11pm.

Watchdog investigators launched an independent inquiry shortly before midnight last night.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “At this early stage it is believed a man was fatally shot during the police response to reports of a suspect vehicle.

“Investigators were sent to the scene and post-incident procedures to start gathering evidence.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all of those affected by this terrible incident.

“Our investigation remains in the very early stages.”
