Police find body in South Norwood lake after six-week search for missing Jamie Gilbey

Officers hunting for missing man Jamie Gilbey have confirmed they have retrieved a body from a south London lake.
Met Police detectives made the tragic discovery on Tuesday in South Norwood lake and woodland.

Hide AdThey said they believe the body to be that of missing 20-year-old Jamie Gilbey.
It follows a grim six-week search for the youngster.
Forensic teams have been searching the well-known dog-walking area for close to a week.
It came after residents reported a suitcase of bloody clothing at a local playground nearby, which cops said has been sent for lab testing.
Scotland Yard said the body has not been identified yet but the family of Mr Gilbey, from Crystal Palace, who was last seen on January 27, have been notified.

Hide AdHe was subject to a missing person appeal and was being looked for in connection with several robbery offences, police said, although the Met stressed he had no prior convictions.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “A body was recovered by officers from the area of South Norwood lake and woodland on the morning of Tuesday, March 8.
“Although we await formal identification, officers believe the body is that of Jamie Gilbey.
“Jamie Gilbey’s family has been made aware.”
Officers arrested Dejour Jones, 24, of no fixed address, and charged him with murder on Friday, March 4.

Hide AdHe was set to attend a hearing at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, March 9.
A spokesperson told LondonWorld: “Information is limited as the defendant refused to attend the hearing.
“Defendant remains in custody.”
His next appearance at the Old Bailey will be on May 24.
Police have asked anyone who was in the area to come forward if they saw anything suspicious.
They also want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity on roads near the lake, namely: Auckland Road, Sylvan Road and Woodvale Avenue.
