Stoke Newington shooting in busy Hackney street - multiple gunshots reported - video from the scene

A major policing operation is under way after a man was taken to hospital.

A man was shot in broad daylight in Hackney on Friday afternoon (August 11), with witnesses saying there were multiple gunshots.

The shooting happened at shortly after 3pm in Stoke Newington High Street, where a cordon is in place.

A man has been taken to hospital and police say no arrests have been made.

Police have authorised a Section 60 covering the whole of Hackney, meaning police can stop and search anyone until 7.30am tomorrow.

Hackney Police said in a statement on social media: “Enquiries are being carried out at pace after a man was shot in #StokeNewington High St shortly after 3pm today.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, and a scene is in place which will be affecting people’s travel through the area.”

The victim was shot in the and his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The force added: “We are working hard to establish who is responsible & will keep everyone updated as soon as possible - we know this is a hugely concerning incident.

Alberto from Visions N16 Salon told LondonWorld: “I heard three consecutive shots and, I think, one fourth one after that. And I saw people running into the salon because families were quite scared. There was a family with kids that ran in.”

He added: “I was okay but it was quite upsetting because it was right on our doorstep.”

Sila from Babel Art House, Cafe and Restaurant said everyone was feeling shaken.

“We were just outside and then we just heard the ‘bang’ noises,” she said. “There were four to five and we, literally, all ran in. It was a split second. Loads of people ran in - everyone ran in - and then we just saw a grey car speeding by.”

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Wallace said: “Gun crime has no place on the streets of London and our dedicated team of detectives will do all we can to track down whoever was responsible for this brazen crime.
