The best pie shops in London 2022: where to get steak, chicken and vegan pies to celebrate British Pie Week

Monday, March 7 2022 marked the start of British Pie Week, which celebrates the famous pie, a classic food staple of the UK.

Pie, liquor and mash shops are some of the hallmarks of British cuisine, and get their own week of recognition every year.

Some of the earliest eateries in the UK were pie shops, with some in London pre-dating World War II.

So, where are some of the best places in London to grab a pie this week?

Hughes’s Pie and Mash

Available on Just Eat and Uber Eats, Hughes’ Pie and Mash shop, located on West End Road, Ruislip is available for delivery and collection.

Their most popular dishes include onemash, one pie, one  liquor and Stewed Eels (5 pieces) with liquor, costing £6 and £6.50 respectively.

The shop is open from 11:30am - 5pm, and is only closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Hughes’s is always very accommodating to all, as they offer 100% British beef pies, but also have a vegan pie range and a host of tasty desserts that includes sticky toffee pudding with custard.

Castle’s Pie & Mash

Located in the Kentish Town area in London, Castle’s Pie & Mash prides itself on being a ‘traditional’ pie shop.

TripAdvisor reviews for this shop are mostly excellent, with fast service mixed with well-liked food being a massive hit, with one reviewer calling it the ‘ultimate pie shop’.

The menu is fairly standard, with the basics being done well such as just pie and mash, eels and mash and more.

Prices for a standard pie and mash here will cost you a modest £3.85.

This shop is closed on Sunday and Monday, but is open from 11:30am - 3:30pm from Tuesday - Friday and Saturday from 10:30am - 4pm.

Arments Pie & Mash

Arments Pie & Mash is described as a ‘simple’ pie and mash shop, serving the foundations of pies including liquor and jellied eels.

From 954 Google reviews, Arments has a 4.7 out of 5 star rating.

Battersea Pie Station

You can find Battersea Pie Station on the lower ground of the popular Covent Garden.

The pie shop was founded almost 15 years ago in 2007, and has been going strong ever since.

Their pastry chef has been hand-making these pies for over 10 years, using the finest ingredients such as free-range eggs.

Traditional pies such as Steak and Stout pies are available here, but you can also sample their chicken and mushroom pie, as well as their butternut squash and goats cheese pie, if you’re a vegetarian.

On weekdays, Battersea Pie Station is open from 11am - 7:30pm and is open on Saturday from 10am - 8pm and Sunday 11am - 7pm.

M.Manze has a fantastic history, and it all started when a family moved to London from Southern Italy in 1878.

Realising the need for more substantial food in post-Victorian London, Michele Manze branched out into the pie, mash & eels trade.

Ever since then, the empire has grown and is currently in its fourth family generation.

M.Manze is available on Just Eat and Deliveroo, and you also have the option to build your own pie box.

Golden Pie is highly rated across numerous platforms including Google and Facebook.

Greenaway’s Pies

Located near The National Gallery and Charing Cross station, Greenaway Pies operates in the heart of London.

Their casual dining concept was introduced by their chef, Mark Greenaways, who puts a modern take on a classic British cuisine.

Greenaway’s Pies is a new venture in London, and was established in 2021 but has already featured in the Metro and The Guardian.

Their pies with mash, gravy and peas are price fixed at £7.50, and include pies such as chicken, mushroom and tarragon and is also inclusive, offering a vegan pie that includes vegan mince, red wine and rosemary.

Greenaway’s Pies is open from 10am - 9pm from Mon - Thurs, 10am - 11pm on Saturdays and 10am - 8pm on Sundays.

Maureen’s Pie and Mash

Maureen’s Pie and Mash shop is a well liked shop in the Chrisp Street Market in London.

It is rated 5/5 on Facebook and Yell, which could be down to Maureen’s Liquor which is a secret family recipe that stretches back over 60 years.

The pies are made fresh every day, with the son of Maureen (Jason) hand making the pies and starting to bake them at 5am so they’re fresh and ready to eat when purchased.

Not sure if you fancy a pie? No problem, as you can order a hot salt beef bagel and a hot salt beef sandwich.
