When it comes to pie and mash shops, knowing where to eat is the secret to success.

And from Walthamstow, Bermondsey and Peckham, to as far afield as Essex and Suffolk, you can get a plate of the hearty meal all across - and around - the capital.

1. B.J.’s Pie House, 330 Barking Road, Plaistow, E13 8HL

The Newham pie shop was described by TimeOut as serving cheap and great quality pie and mash - with chilli vinegar with a serious kick and chips as a contentious mash substitute.

2. Byrnes, 5 Ross Parade, Wallington, SM6 8QG

Byrne’s, in Sutton, describe themselves as a pie, mash and eel house, serving the most traditional meal of London; pie, mash and liquor.

They say: “Our pies are homemade and freshly baked daily using only the best quality British beef.”

3. Cockney’s, 314 Portobello Road, Ladbroke Grove, W10 5RU

The West London pie shop, in Kensington and Chelsea, has a five star rating on Facebook and four and a half stars on Trip Advisor.

4. Maldon Pie and Eel House, 136 High Street, Maldon, Essex, CM9 5BX

This Essex pie and eel shop say they are “bringing the East End to Essex” and “paying homage to the spirit of these tiled, steamy temples dedicated to the worship of hot pies”.

They also serve vegetarian options and ice cream, and will cater your wedding.

5. L. Manze, 76 High Street, Walthamstow, E17 7LD

This Waltham Forest pie shop was even granted Grade II listed status in 2013. It was one of the original M. Manze pie shops and was run by the family until 1970.

6. M. Manze, Bermondsey or Peckham

Dubbed “the home of pie and mash” M. Manze Pie and Mash say they “need no introduction”.

Founded by Michele Manze more than 100 years ago, their branches are still serving legendary pie, mash, eels and liquor to the hungry public.

The Pie and Mash club recommend visiting either the Bermondsey branch, at 87 Tower Bridge Road, SE1 4TW, or Peckham, at 105 High Street, SE15 5RS.

7. Maureen’s, 6 Market Way, Poplar, E14 6AQ

This East End haunt has served pie and mash with liquor, jellied or stewed eels, and hot salt beef sandwiches and beigels for over 60 years.

Even offering delivery, they say: “Everybody seems to enjoy Maureen’s.”

8. Millers Pie and Mash, 8 Albert Road, Belvedere, DA17 5LJ

Millers in Bexley offers traditional handmade pies, with gravy and chilli vinegar available as well as liquor.

While customers share fond memories of the place on their Facebook page.

9. Sally Jane’s Traditional Pie and Mash, 2 Beach Station Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk, IP11 2DR

A stretch further afield, but Sally Jane’s in Suffolk will deliver - including live, smoked and stewed eels - to any UK postcode.

While they also offer family box deals and gluten free and vegetarian options.

10. Scott’s Pie and Mash, 51 The Walnuts, Orpington, BR6 0TW

Scott’s in Bromley also has great reviews, with 4.8 stars on UberEats and Facebook and 4.5 on TripAdvisor.

11. Whites, 95 High Street, Walton on the Naze 

Another Essex offering, Whites Pie and Mash shop has been trading in Walton-on-the-Naze for forty years.

They say: “All our pies are made on the premises using the best quality products.

“Our jellied eels and stewed eels are the best around, cooked to a recipe that we have used for the last forty five years since trading on Billingsgate market.”
