It’s been a funny old year in terms of music in 2024 - from reunions that many never thought would happen to one of the most “wholesome” rock stars in the world admitting he’s not…
We’ve seen both records and hearts broken by Taylor Swift (through her relationship with Travis Kelce - no other reason), RAYE reign supreme at the biggest music awards ceremony in the United Kingdom and some of us were licking our favourite Spice Girl - by virtue of a series of stamps created bearing their visages.
So what from the world of music throughout the past 12 months caught our attention and, more importantly, remained in our heads rent free right up to the moment you’re reading this?
We’ve gone month-by-month to pick some of the music stories over the last year that had not only us talking in the newsrooms, but became big talking points for many across the United Kingdom. The only question is - do you remember many of these moments over the past 12 months?

5. May
In May 2024, Olly Alexander represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest with his track "Dizzy," finishing in 18th place out of 25 finalists. Despite strong expectations, Alexander's performance fell short of the top spots. Meanwhile, Switzerland earned the honour of hosting Eurovision 2025 after their entry, The Code by Nemo, triumphed with a win in the competition. On a different note, Sir Paul McCartney made history as the first British musician to become a billionaire, according to the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List. Sadly, the month also saw the passing of Steve Albini, the influential music producer and engineer, who died of a heart attack at the age of 61, leaving a significant legacy in the world of alternative rock and music production. | Getty Images

6. June
In June 2024, Coldplay marked a milestone with their record fifth appearance as the Saturday night headliner at Glastonbury. Their memorable set featured a special guest performance by actor Michael J. Fox, who joined the band on stage. Additionally, the world of music saw several individuals being recognized in the 2024 Birthday Honours. Composer John Rutter and administrator Roger Wright received CBEs, while singer Liz Mitchell and Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon were both honoured with MBEs for their contributions to music. 7. July
In July 2024, Eminem made a significant return with the release of his first studio album in four years, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The album marked a new phase in his career, building anticipation among fans and critics alike. Phish also released their first studio album in four years, Evolve, continuing their signature style of experimental rock and jam music. In the world of classical music, the Welsh National Opera made a noteworthy announcement, appointing Adele Thomas and Sarah Crabtree as joint holders of the roles of general director and chief executive officer, with their tenure set to begin in January 2025 | Getty Images/Welsh National Opera

8. August
Oasis made a highly anticipated announcement that they would reform for performances in the UK and Ireland in July and August 2025. BBC Radio 1 celebrated the 25th anniversary of its iconic Live Lounge series, polling presenters to select the top performances from its history. Amy Winehouse's 2007 cover of "Valerie," originally by the Zutons, secured the top spot, a testament to her enduring influence. Aerosmith announced the cancellation of their Peace Out: The Farewell Tour after only three shows, citing permanent vocal cord damage suffered by frontman Steven Tyler.
