The summer of 2024 is set to be a scorcher – for fans of great festivals and thrilling sports events, at least!

All eyes will be on Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics but if you’re more into music than sport, there’s also a wealth to entertain you, either in person or on your TV, laptop or smartphone.

Here’s our guide to the pick of the action for summer at Glastonbury Festival and Paris 2024:

Paris Olympics

When: from Friday, 26 July, when the opening ceremony officially lights the Olympic flame, until Sunday, 11 August.

Where: Paris, France, but events are taking place all over the country – plus the surfing contest will be held in Tahiti

What to watch

Athletics: the track and field events are always a highlight, with finals typically held in the evenings.

Swimming: watch for world records and thrilling races, usually in the first week of the Games.

Gymnastics: artistic gymnastics showcases incredible skill and athleticism, with team and individual events.

Cycling: track, road, and BMX events all feature, with Team GB traditionally performing well.

Team sports: football, basketball, and volleyball, among others, provide continuous excitement.

Don’t miss out on…

Breakdancing: making its Olympic debut, adding a touch of urban culture and dynamic performances to the Games.

Surfing: the world-famous surf spot of Teahupo'o in Tahiti, French Polynesia, is set to host the 2024 Paris Olympics surfing competition and it makes for great viewing.

Skateboarding: this was introduced in Tokyo 2020, when Sky Brown became Team GB's youngest Olympic medal winner when she took bronze, and it continues to attract younger audiences.

Sport climbing: this includes speed, bouldering, and lead disciplines, highlighting astonishing strength and agility.

How to watch

With so many different disciplines, there’s a huge amount to see so you need to be on top of the schedule!

The BBC is the official Olympic broadcaster, so the BBC Sport website and BBC iPlayer should be your go-to for the latest schedules and live updates as well as live streams to help you follow all the action.

Check websites like Radio Times or TV Guide for daily listings and timings for all Olympic events on both BBC and Eurosport channels.

Glastonbury Festival

When: June 26-30

Where: Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset

What to watch

The world’s best-known music and performing arts festival features some of the best international and local acts across every genre. There are always utterly unique things to see and do, including crazy circus and theatre performances.

Headliners this year include Dua Lipa on Friday night headliner, along with PJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem, and Coldplay on Saturday night.

Don’t miss out on…

The anarchic Arcadia area kicks off a whole new chapter with their boldest installation yet for 2024: the Dragonfly, a giant biomechanical creature made from a Royal Navy helicopter, will “awaken at the heart of an evolved geometric space” – coaxed to life each night by representatives of the Aboriginal Wadjuk Noongar nation.

And when it’s time to chill out, you can head to the Green Fields for some peace and inspiration.

How to watch

The BBC, Glastonbury's exclusive broadcast partner, brings audiences its longest celebration of the festival yet this year, with six weeks of build-up and coverage running from Monday, June 3, until Sunday, July 14, across TV, BBC iPlayer, radio and BBC Sounds.
