This RVT event aims to bring London’s queer scene together

Before Grindr, there was blind date…and now, it's being brought back to teach Queer men a lesson in connection.

For many Queer men in London, connection now begins and ends with an app where desire is filtered through grids, labels, and albums rather than conversation.

However, on Sunday 1 March, Impulse London will attempt to disrupt that norm with Grind Date at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

The night promises to be a gloriously camp spoof of the 90s television classic Blind Date, destined to give attendees “a lorra lora laughs.”

Billed as “Three Suitors, One Hot Seat, Zero Swiping”, the event gives queer men the chance to find chat, friends, love and everything in between, entirely offline.

Advocacy director for Impulse London, Ant Babajee, said: “The event is our way of creating a fun, low-pressure space for people to connect, whether on stage or in the crowd, whatever that means to them.”

Hosted by The Ginger Phlappage, stepping into the heels of Cilla Black in all her drag glory, to pick one lucky man to sit in the hot seat and choose a date from three mystery suitors.

Between rounds, Kiki Snatch (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK) and comedian David Ian (The Queer Comedy Club) will balance the matchmaking with gut-busting laughter.

Babajee added: “The event is a hilarious, queer homage to the original Blind Date, but it also tackles something serious.”

Impulse London was founded in 2017 as the capital’s chapter of the global Impulse United movement, a volunteer-led charity.

It works to engage and support queer men who participate in chemsex while promoting HIV awareness, mental well-being, and social justice.

With this in mind, Grind Date is as much a parody as it is an intervention.

London has lost more than half of its LGBTQ+ venues in the past two decades, part of a broader pattern of gentrification, rising rents and shifting urban priorities that have hollowed out queer physical space.

At the same time, apps where transactional sex is readily available have become the default meeting ground for queer men navigating isolation and convenience.

Impulse’s approach is rooted in harm reduction and peer support, recognising that community-led solutions are often more effective than top-down messaging.

According to Babajee, research consistently shows that loneliness disproportionately affects gay, bi and trans adults.

To combat this, the night will be packed with opportunities to meet new people through a photo booth, offstage mingling, and signposting to social clubs, showing that not every relationship needs to be romantic to be important.

However, matched couples will receive drink tokens for a follow-up date, but organisers are clear that the aim is broader than matchmaking.

Grind Date may be wrapped in wigs and innuendo, but its premise is simple: community cannot survive on swipes alone.

Entry to the event is free, and Impulse would like Queer men who are up for taking part to sign up by messaging @impulselondon on Instagram.
