‘We've been robbed of the Disco Line’ - Londoners react to rejected Overground line names

Disco, Harlequin and Polari are just some of the names that could have been used across the Overground network.

A long list of rejected names for London Overground’s re-brand last year has finally been revealed and Londoners are already reacting to what could have been online.

The network’s six lines were renamed last year in a bid to make the service easier to navigate.

At the time the new names Liberty, Lioness, Mildmay, Suffragette, Weaver, and Windrush were rolled out across the capital services.

However it has now been revealed the final names were picked out of a whole host of suggestions.

This week the full list of names that didn't make it to London Overground signage was revealed by the London Centric news website.

In a document sourced via a Freedom of Information request, 27 potential names were listed alongside a further 51 names that were also considered during the process.

Some of the rejected names include Disco, Harlequin, Fanns, Polari, Skylark and Cable Street.

Redditors have already begun sharing their thoughts on the names that were dropped including ones they feel “robbed” of.

One user wrote: “Robbed of the Disco Line and the Push and Pull Line.”

But it seems the most popular names in which Redditors wish were actually used on the London Overground network are Willow, Skylark and Cable Street.

Another wrote: “Willow line, Skylark line and Cable Street line are all much better than what we got,” while second added: “I like cable street line and willow line best from all the rejects.”

Willow references the trees that run along the banks of the River Lea of which a few overground lines pass with Skylark the name of the familiar birds native to the Walthamstow Wetlands area.

The Cable Street name honours the history of the Shadwell area and the notable anti-fascist demonstration it hosted in 1936 where the community came together in support.
