The date for the Olivier Awards 2023 with Mastercard has been announced.

The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) announced the popular awards show will return to the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, April 2 2023 and legendary choreographer Anthony Van Laast will be the Show Creative Director.

The Olivier Awards was first established in 1976, and celebrates the world class nature of the West End, and is Britain’s most prestigious stage honours. The name of the event is a nod to Laurence Olivier.

He was an actor, director and founder of the National Theatre Company. In 1984, five years before his death, Olivier agreed to give his name to the awards.

The Olivier Awards have been held at the Royal Albert Hall since 2017 and according to the London Theatre website, previous ceremonies have been at the Royal Opera House and many West End theatres, including the Dominion Theatre, London Palladium, Lyceum Theatre, National Theatre, Piccadilly Theatre, Shaftesbury Theatre, Theatre Royal Drury Lane and Victoria Palace Theatre.

Who were the biggest Olivier Awards 2022 winners?

This year, Cabaret were the biggest winners, winning a total of seven awards, including Magic Radio Best Musical Revival.

World renowned actor Eddie Redmayne, known for The Danish Girl and more also won the award for Actor in a Musical.

Cabaret is still active, and is currently playing at the Playhouse Theatre.

Life Of Pi also had a successful night, with five wins including Best New Play. The show is currently playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

And the Back to the Future musical, featuring 2017 Love Island winner Amber Davies won one of the most coveted awards, winning the Mastercard Best New Musical award. The musical is currently playing at the Adelphi Theatre, which has previously played host to Waitress and more.

How are award winners chosen?

There is no vote that is open to the general public. The Official London Theatre says: “Winners are decided by a group of distinguished industry professionals, theatre luminaries and members of the public specifically chosen for their passion for London theatre.”
