Londoners will be able to see a meteor shower across the capital’s skies next week as the Lyrid meteor display peaks across our skies.

The burst of meteor activity is an annual event which typically occurs in the spring around mid to late April.

In fact it is the oldest recorded meteor shower that is still visible in our skies today, having first been recorded in 687 BCE.

City locals hoping to catch the display can expect to see a bright fast shower with it having previously produced around 18 meteors per hour at its peak.

When will the 2025 Lyrid meteor shower be visible in London?

The shower will be visible in the city’s skies from Wednesday (April 16) up until April 25. However it will be at its peak, specifically on April 22.

The best time to see the meteor shower would be between the mid evening to the early hours of the morning. Londoners will get the best view of the Lyrid display on April 22 when it is at its peak.

Where to watch the 2025 Lyrid meteor shower in London

Those hoping to get a glimpse of the meteor shower in the capital won’t have to worry about getting a telescope, as it will be visible to the naked eye. However, both weather and light pollution could end up obstructing the spectacle.

While London is one of the most light-polluted spots in the country, it’s still possible to stargaze. City dwellers may be able to catch a glimpse of the shower if they head to a higher vantage point, such as a rooftop or even a local park.

There are a number of spots throughout London in which locals and visitors may be able to see the shower. One of the most renowned spots is Morden Hall Park in South London, but Primrose Hill and Greenwich Park could also offer clear views.
