The TCS London Marathon is back for 2023 and thousands of runners are pounding the pavements of the famous route across the city. As those taking part focus on their performance, there’s no doubt many will have their hopes set on crossing the finish line first.

The popular marathon will take over the city this Sunday on April 23. This year marks the return of the event to its usual spring slot after it took place in the autumn months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Competitors hoping to outrun their fellow marathoners at this year’s event will join a long line of victors if they are successful. Past winners include several Olympians, including four-time London Marathon winner Eliud Kipchoge as well as Brigid Kosgei, who has won the event twice.

The capital held its first marathon in 1981 and, over the last four decades, has seen many athletes and runners cross the finish line. Among the hundreds of thousands who have entered over the years, the marathon has had a total of 85 winners to date.

Let’s take a look at some of the past London Marathon winners, including who the current reigning victors are, as well as those who have crossed the finish line first over the past few decades. We’ll bring you the 2023 winners as soon as they have crossed the line.

Who were the 2022 London Marathon winners?

Kenyan long-distance runner Amos Kipruto and Ethiopian athlete Yalemzerf Yehualaw were the two winners of last year’s annual marathon across the capital.

Amos Kipruto was top of the men’s event with a finishing time of 2:04:39, while Yalemzerf Yehualaw was victorious against her fellow female marathon runners after she clocked in with a time of 2:17:26.

Kipruto’s win followed his Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 games. As well as her 2022 London Marathon title, Yehualaw became the youngest female winner of the event in its more than four-decade history.

A look at the past London Marathon winners over the last 22 years

Since the millennium, a total of 44 athletes have earnt the title of London Marathon winner. Among the victorious few, some have even crossed the finish line first more than once.

One of the top male winners is Eliud Kipchoge, who won the race four times in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. As well as winning the London Marathon a total of four times, Kipchoge is also an Olympian and has two gold medals that he won across the 2016 and 2020 games.

Mary Jepkosgei Keitany is also an Olympian, having competed in the 2012 London games. As well as representing Kenya in the Olympics, she is also one of the top female  London Marathon winners as she earned the title three times, in 2011, 2012 and five years later in 2017.

Are any past winners set to run in the 2023 London Marathon?

Yes. Both 2022 winners, Amos Kipruto and Yalemzerf Yehualaw, have announced they will be returning to the capital for another go at the world-famous marathon.

Kipruto and Yehualaw shared the news of their London Marathon return on Instagram at the start of February as they confirmed they planned to "defend" their 2022 title.

In matching posts, the two shared snaps of their finish line moment from last year to their pages as they agreed they are "very happy" to be a part of the festivities once again.
