Runners in this year’s London Marathon event will be able to get a close-up view of some of the capital’s most famous landmarks as they race around the city on foot. The gruelling 26.2mile route remains largely unchanged since the inaugural event in 1981 - but it continues to pass-by many of London’s most iconic sights, both old and new.

Famous historic sites such as The Tower of London and Big Ben can be seen en route, as well as new, shiny landmarks like the skyscrapers at Canary Wharf and the Shard. Thousands of runners are due to take off from Greenwich Park on April 23 for the 43rd edition of the race before hitting the finish line at The Mall, near Buckingham Palace.

This year the London Marathon has returned to its usual spring slot, after being postponed to the autumn months during the Covid pandemic. Crowds are expected to flock to the capital on race day to cheer on their loved ones along the famous route.

The TCS London Marathon website warns that some parts of the route – including the areas by Cutty Sark and St James’s Park get very busy on Marathon Day, while The Highway will enable you to see everyone pass twice.
