Celebrated US comic Dave Chappelle has announced a series of last minute performances in the London area overnight, including an early evening show at the Bush Hall. Live Nation, the promoters for Chappelle’s London shows, revealed the news late Thursday afternoon (November 5) in a short press release announcing the dates.

Three additional dates have now been added to Chappelle’s schedule as he plays London’s O2 Academy Islington this evening, before heading to Leicester Square Theatre and two performances at the Bush Hall.  Like a lot of international comedy as of late though and the dreaded comedian’s fear of their work being taken out of context (or just people ruining punchlines for comedians), Live Nation have confirmed that no mobile phones or recording devices will be allowed during the performances.

All phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones throughout the night, and if needed, may access their phones at designated Yondr unlocking stations in the lobby. Anyone caught using their phone during the performance will be “immediately ejected”, with Live Nation stating that they hope audiences enjoy a “phone-free” experience.

Recognized as one of the greatest comedians of all time, Dave Chappelle was awarded the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2019. Chappelle’s work in stand-up comedy, writing, producing, and acting has earned him more than 30 nominations and awards in television and film for projects that include his ground-breaking sketch comedy television series, Chappelle’s Show.

Chappelle has won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album three years in a row, 2018 to 2020, and in 2017, Netflix cited Dave Chappelle: Collection 1 as the most-viewed comedy special ever on their network. His work on Netflix has been polarising however, leading to calls of transphobia within his work and leading to a walkout by employees with the streaming giant.
