Tottenham Hotspur play their first game since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II this week with a trip to Lisbon, Portugal in the second round of UEFA Champions League 2022-2023 group games.

The team sit second in Group D of the European competition after defeating Marseille 2-0 in their first group game, with Richarlison scoring a brace in the second half.

It will be Tottenham’s first away game in the elite European club competition, as Antonio Conte’s team were granted a berth in the UEFA Champions League group stage by virtue of the fourth place finish in the Premier League last season.

Who Are Sporting CP?

Sporting Clube de Portugal were founded in July 1906, and is one of the Big Three football clubs in Portugal, along with rivals S.L. Benfica and FC Porto. Internationally, Sporting are currently ranked 27th in UEFA club rankings.

Sporting are the third most decorated Portuguese football team, with a total of 54 trophies, including one international title, the 1963–64 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Domestically, they have won 23 Primeira Liga titles, 17 Portuguese Cups (Taça de Portugal), 4 Taça da Liga and 9 Portuguese Super Cup trophies.

Sporting CP made their way to the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League by finishing as runners-up of the Primeira Liga in 2021-2022 - the top-level of football in Portugal’s football pyramid.

In the first gameweek of the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League, Sporting CP took on Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt - who entered the Champions League by virtue of winning last season’s UEFA Europa League.

Sporting CP travelled to Frankfurt Stadion, Frankfurt am Main, Germany where they ran out 3-0 winners, with goals from Marcus Edwards, Francisco Trincão and Nuno Santos all coming in the second half.

They sit top of Group D on goal difference over Spurs.’

Tottenham will be travelling to the José Alvalade Stadium, Lisbon, Portugal to face Sporting CP on Tuesday September 13 with a kick off at 5:45pm BST.
