American Football returns to London as the National Football League brings the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints to the capital, as part of its NFL London series of international games

The NFL decided to expand its regular season to 17 games in 2021 and that up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

This year, games will be played in London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley Stadium), Mexico City, Mexico and Munich, Germany.

This year’s teams that qualified for the international games in London are the Minnesota Vikings, the New Orleans Saints, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.

Who are the teams playing?

The Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints both play in the National Football Conference (NFC), with the NFL split into two different conferences - the NFC and the AFC (American Football Conference).

The splits are due to both conferences at one stage being different American Football leagues, until their merger in 1970.

Taking their name to reflect the Scandinavian American culture of Minnesota, the Vikings were formed in 1960 as part of a league expansion and began playing in the NFL in the 1961 season.

Despite having an all-time overall record of 524 wins, 451 losses and 11 draws, the Vikings have never won a Super Bowl in their history and hold the NFL record for most playoff losses in history with 30.

Three time NFL MVP and NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre played his final season with the Minnesota Vikings, before retiring from the game in 2011.

Formed in 1975, after the AFC-NFL merger, the New Orleans Saints were among the NFL’s least successful franchises in their first several decades.

However at the turn of the millennium, bolstered by strong postseason performances, the Saints reached the pinnacle of American Football, winning the NFC Conference Championship and then Super Bowl XLIV both in 2009.

Interestingly, the Saints have a strong rivalry with their NFL London opponents, the Minnesota Vikings, dating back to 1988 and due to the regular match-ups during the NFL playoffs.
