Arsenal: Iconic Highbury moments in photos as the Gunners top the league once again

We take a look at some of Highbury’s most memorable moments, from its construct in 1913 to Arsenal’s final game there in 2006.

For fans above a certain age, Highbury remains the spiritual home of Arsenal Football Club.

For 93 years, the stadium, in Islington, was Arsenal’s iconic home ground. Built in 1913 on a local college’s recreation ground, it was not until 2006 when the club made the move to their current home stadium, the newly built Emirates, just down the road.

As well as Arsenal home games, Highbury hosted internationals, and sports including boxing and cricket.

Known for its small but immaculate pitch, it bore witness to great teams including Arsene Wenger’s early-noughties ‘Invincibles’.

Arsenal's final game at Highbury saw the genius of Thierry Henry clinch a Champions League spot for the club over north London rivals Tottenham on May 7, 2006. The Gunners needed to better their rivals’ score, and a completed hat-trick saw Henry sink to his knees to kiss the turf

Upon Arsenal leaving the ground in 2006, Highbury was turned into a new residential development called Highbury Square. The east and west stands were retained, with the east stand Grade-II listed.

With Arsenal again flying high in the league under manager Mikel Arteta, we decided it was time to take a look back at some iconic moments at the club’s beloved old stadium.
