West Ham 'submit offer' to sign ex-Man Utd star who is 'capable of creating' on free transfer

West Ham are said to have submitted an offer to a player they could sign for free.

West Ham are said to have tabled an offer for a former Manchester United star as they look to strengthen both in the short and medium future. The Hammers have had a disappointing campaign so far, currently in 14th place and on their second manager of the season.

The Hammers are hoping to pick up under Graham Potter, but it’s going to take time to get up and running under their new boss, and new signings may be key to jumpstarting that revival.

Asked if West Ham expect to sign anyone this month, Potter said: “No, I don’t think there’s an expectation. In every window there's always a responsibility for the club to look and to see if there's anything that can help us, whether that's short-term, medium-term, long-term.

“The January window is not the most easy of windows, it can be complicated. So, I have no expectations in terms of that. It’s more that my focus is on the team that we've got, the players that we've got, how I can try to help them. And then at the same time, always be aware of opportunities that can come.”

In the meantime, it has been claimed that Ezechiel Banzuzi is headed to the London Stadium, and beyond that, The Boot Room claim that West Ham have submitted a pre-contract offer to Lille star Angel Gomes.

The midfielder is out of contract with the French club at the end of this season, and clubs outside of France are free to agree a pre-contract agreement. West Ham are looking to take advantage of that to land a four-time England international who left Man United after making just six league appearances in 2020, since making 102 league appearances for Lille.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright once said of Gomes after he was included in an England squad: “Gomes is capable of creating something out of nothing. Hopefully he can play more games against better opposition so we can see what he’s really like.” Potter appears to be keen on adding some of that creativity to his squad, and on a free transfer no less.
