West Ham player ratings: 3/10s 'gave up' and 'can't do that' as Liverpool romp to victory

The visit of Liverpool to the London Stadium could always have been a messy end to the calendar year for West Ham but it was whimpering showing from Julen Lopetegui’s men to close off 2024.
The ever-inspired Mohamed Salah was the star man as he conducted a dominate Reds display in London. The Egypt international was one of five different scorers for Liverpool with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota all also finding the back of the net.

Hide AdLopetegui will struggle for positives in the latest Premier League defeat, despite Mohammed Kudus and Luis Guilherme hitting the woodwork for the hosts. Here’s how the West Ham players rated.
West Ham player ratings
GK - Alphonse Areola, 8
Had a lot to do tonight and got down well to make several good saves. Looked particularly confident when keeping Salah at bay early doors before the floodgates opened. Can’t be held at fault for the capitulation but perhaps could have got a stronger hand to the Reds’ third.
LB - Aaron Wan Bissaka, 6
Has grown into one of the Hammers’ most influential players but lacked that influence today. Was given a huge task keeping track of Salah and working with Emerson offensively during the first half. Gave it a good go but that was somewhat of an unfair mission. Moved to right back after half time.
CB - Konstantios Mavropanos, 3

Got the tackle wrong before Diaz scored, overcommitting himself and nutmegged by Salah ahead of the second.
CB - Max Kilman, 5

Hide AdStarted the match alert in his penalty box with some crucial interventions. Looked to have the bit between his teeth as he stormed forward with the ball in the 34th minute but looked leggy as the match went on. Could have got tighter for the Liverpool third and saw Alexander-Arnold’s shot from distance fly in off his head.
RB - Vladimir Coufal, 5
Not an awful first half performance before his sub at the break, despite being part of a defence that conceded three. Liverpool's joy came on the other flank through Mohamed Salah.
CM - Carlos Soler, 3
Dispossessed in his own half ahead of the third goal. You can't let that happen against a side like Liverpool. Looks to be somewhat of a luxury player in the Premier League at the moment, purring when his side are in control but lacking grit when his side has backs against the wall.
CM - Edson Alvarez, 4
Only afforded 45 minutes but couldn't add a bite in midfield to stop a purring Liverpool dominating the match.
CM - Lucas Paqueta, 3

Hide AdSlipped when a good opportunity fell into his path in the first half. Seemed to somewhat give up as time went on.
LM - Emerson, 4
Not convincing in that left midfield role when trying to work with Wan-Bissaka. A little more comfortable in his usual position after the break but a tough night.
RM - Mohammed Kudus, 7
Clearly the one who would make something happen for West Ham tonight, hitting the woodwork twice. The only real positive on Sunday but some of his defensive work looked half-cooked at best.
ST - Jarrod Bowen, 5

Little chance to cause problems today. Limped off gingerly just before 60 minutes, his absence for any period of time would be a huge blow for West Ham.
SUB - Niclas Fullkrug, 4

Hide AdLittle impact off the bench. A half chance fell his way following a Crysencio Summerville cross but not alert enough to make anything of it.
SUB - Jean-Clair Todibo, 4
Pedestrian when he came on, playing Salah onside for one of the few chances that didn’t result in the goal. Made to look significantly inferior by the Egyptian before the fifth.
SUB - Crysencio Summerville, 7
Did pose a threat with some nice use of his pace on the flank. Had a weak shout for a penalty waved away.
SUB - Andy Irving, 5
Put a nice cross onto Kudus’ head, which eventually hit the frame of the goal. Had fresh legs but not at the same pace as Liverpool.
SUB - Luis Guilherme, 6
Almost saw a shot from distance creep in via a couple of deflections.
