West Ham, Chelsea and Man Utd plot summer swoop for Premier League bagsman loved by Thierry Henry
Crystal Palace could face a summer transfer raid with Marc Guehi, Daniel Munoz and now Jean-Philippe Mateta linked with exits.
Chelsea and West Ham are two of several Premier League clubs looking to sign prolific Crystal Palace talisman Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer.
The Eagles forward is in high-demand as he enjoyed a head turning campaign at Selhurst Park. Mateta bagged a brace in the 2-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, taking his tally for the season up to 10. Six of those goals have come in his last five league outings as transfer rumours begin to swirl.
In the same week that saw the Blues linked with transfer interest in Eagles full-back Daniel Munoz, TBR Football adds that Enzo Maresca’s side are also ‘monitoring’ Mateta.
West Ham and Chelsea in transfer race against Premier League rivals
West Ham, Manchester United and Newcastle United are also named as potential suitors for the player. Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are also namechecked in the fresh report, suggesting that almost half of the division would like to sign the player this summer.
The Frenchman is yet to sign a new deal at Crystal Palace. His contract had been due to expire in fewer than 18 months before the club triggered a 12-month extension. He is now contracted until 2027 but it is thought that a sizeable bid could persuade the club to sanction an exit.
Crystal Palace paid just £9 million to sign the player from FC Mainz 05 back in January 2022 and any sale would likely be a huge profit for the club. Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Marseille are also said to be watching the player.
Mateta won a silver medal at the Olympics last summer, playing under Premier League legend Thierry Henry for the French side. Speaking about the player, the former Arsenal striker said: “He’s an old-fashioned striker, you can play a little more direct. He can keep the ball. He’s a boring striker to play against, he doesn’t lose the ball much, and he goes at the last defender. He uses his physicality, he’s good with his head, and he scores.
“It’s important that a striker like that gives you another dimension. He was also voted Player of the Year at Crystal Palace. It seems to me that he’s not too bad.”
Oliver Glasner hails ‘amazing’ striker
The striker has also earned praise for Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner in recent weeks amid his prolific run of form. The Eagles boss said: “It is amazing when you have a number nine who scores goals — that is what everyone expects from a striker. He has the confidence and the feeling at the moment. Both goals were one-touch finishes.
“For the set play, he was there; he had the feeling and the confidence to be in the right areas. The second goal looked easy in the end because it was a one-touch finish, but it was his 20th run in behind.
“He runs and runs, and many times, he does not get the ball, but in the end, he gets the rewards. I am pleased with his performance, but he alone could not score all the goals.”
In other news, Chelsea have been handed a fresh double injury below ahead of the two meetings with Brighton next week.
