West Ham 'cannot rule out' move for ex-Spurs winger on deadline day

West Ham United 'cannot rule out' a move for a former Tottenham Hotspur winger in in January transfer deadline day.

West Ham United could make waves on January transfer deadline day, as they 'cannot rule out' a move for former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn on the final day of the transfer window.

This is according to a report from Dutch media outlet Voetbal Primeur - West Ham are thought to still be 'very much in the mix' as they vie for the 26-year-old's signature before the window slams shut in just a few hours. Ajax will not allow Bergwijn to leave on a loan - if any club wishes to snap him up, it will need to be on a permanent basis.

The Hammers have been monitoring the player for 'several months' now. They aren't the only interested party - clubs in the Saudi Pro League have also been linked with a move for Bergwijn over the last few months. The Irons may struggle to match their financial muscle, but no offers have been officially submitted as of yet. Additionally, German giants Bayern Munich are also thought to be interested.

What would Steven Bergwijn bring to West Ham United?

West Ham currently have some supremely talented attacking talents at the club, including Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta. However, with Said Benrahma reportedly set to depart the London Stadium on a loan move to Lyon in Ligue 1, they will need another wide player to maintain their squad depth.

Bergwijn was a modest success at Spurs, making 60 Premier League appearances for West Ham's bitter rivals, scoring seven goals along the way. He also has plenty of international experience under the belt, having made 32 appearances for The Netherlands, scoring eight goals for his country.

His move to Ajax was steeped in controversy - he had spent nine years at PSV prior to this and was immediately installed as captain upon his arrival.
