West Ham and Brentford face potential blow as Newcastle United consider FA appeal

Newcastle United hope to have a ban to a key attacking player lifted following the FA Cup controversy.

Newcastle United will meet to consider an appeal against the red card shown to Anthony Gordon in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday. The England international is currently ruled out of upcoming Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Brentford.

Perhaps more urgently for the Magpies, he will also be suspended for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium later this month. Eddie Howe’s side travel to the London Stadium next Monday and then host Brentford at the start of April, after the cup final.

Gordon was given his marching orders against the Seagulls after shoving Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. That dismissal for violent conduct comes with a three-match ban but Howe admitted that the Tyneside club will meet to talk about the incident and may challenge that. His side went on to lose that fifth round cup meeting against Brighton on penalties.

Newcastle United looking at FA appeal after Anthony Gordon red card

He said: "Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there's grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation. I'd need to see it, I can't sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I've done the work that you've done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there's no malice intended there."

The absence of Gordon in those upcoming fixtures against London clubs would certainly be a boost for West Ham and Brentford. The winger is an influential part of the Newcastle United attack with nine goals and six assists in 34 games this season. Only Alexander Isak is more prolific for the Magpies.

The Hammers and the Bees will both be going into that meeting with Newcastle United confident of getting a result, having beaten the opposition already this season. Brentford won 4-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium in December with West Ham beating the Magpies 2-0 at St James’ Park in November.

Eddie Howe stands by character of England international

Speaking to the BBC during the Brighton match, former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson criticised Gordon for his ‘petulance’. Robinson said: “Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke. Gordon knows he cannot get there and he has run into Van Hecke with two hands. It looked like frustration to me. He has pushed the Brighton defender with force.

“Petulance. That's all it was. Gordon felt hard done by that he didn't get the early penalty. That motion is what the referee has seen. It is stupid from Anthony Gordon.”

Howe added: "He plays hard - I want him to play hard, I want him to be competitive, but I don't see an issue there at this moment.

"I think it would be very out of context with how he is generally, maybe a bit of frustration in the game that things weren't going our way, but I'd say that's not a common sight for me when Anthony plays."
