West Ham boss David Moyes admitted his position as manager was “in danger” but said he had no doubt the board was still behind him despite Wednesday’s 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

The result left the Hammers as one of four clubs on 27 points, with Moyes’ side only outside of the bottom three on goal difference.

Callum Wilson and Joelinton scored twice in each half, with Alexander Isak also netting for the in-form Magpies.

Kurt Zouma had made it 2-1 after 40 minutes but a defensive mix-up 22 seconds into the second-half gifted Wilson a goal as Newcastle remained comfortable for the rest of the game.

Asked by Sky Sports if he had support from the board, Moyes said: “No doubt they are behind me, but if you lose badly like that as a manager you’re always in danger.”

West Ham still have a game in hand over all of the sides below them, as well as the three above them. Victory in that game would move them up into 12th as things stand, in a congested bottom half with as many as nine teams facing the prospect of relegation this campaign.

A number of fans left the game early and Moyes admitted: “I might have walked out as well, I know how it works. But when it’s bad that’s when you stand up to be a true supporter, we’ve had good times getting into Europe, now we’re having bad times. I’ve got no qualms them leaving with a result like that.”

West Ham make the trip to Fulham this weekend but face a tough run of games at home with Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United and relegation rivals Leeds United the only sides left to visit the London Stadium this season.
