West Ham reached the quarter final of a major European competition for the first time since 1981, with a 2-0 win over Sevilla at the London Stadium.
Goals from Czech midfielder Tomáš Souček and Ukrainian forward Andriy Yarmolenko gave the east London side a solid 2-0 win, to ensure they won the tie 2-1 and progressed to the next round of the competition.
With the game billed as the biggest since the Hammers moved to the London Stadium, 59,100 West Ham fans trooped to the stadium to witness the teams progress to the last eight of this season’s Europa League.
David Moyes’ side did not disappoint after carefully taking the lead, and masterfully picking their moment to rip their much-fancied Spanish opponents apart.
The Hammers become the first English side to beat the six-time Europa League winners in this competition, and will hope to kick on and try and reach the final this year.
Heroes
Tomáš Souček - The West Ham midfielder might not be operating at the level he was last season, but he is one of the reasons why the Hammers are in Europe and popped up with a very important goal to lift the home fans.
The Czech international out-jumped the Sevilla defence to guide the ball into the net and give his side the lead in the first half.
He missed a chance in extra time but still a top performance on a very important day.
Alphonse Areola produced an absolute world-class save to keep his side in the game in the first half.
His distribution, calmness and experience at this level brought so much serenity to the backline, when Sevilla did try to threaten.
He brings the big player, big-game mentality to the team.
Michail Antonio - Antonio is an absolute tank, who just never stopped running and attacking the Sevilla backline.
He got an assist for Soucek’s goal and made several runs to ensure that he worked the Sevilla team all game.
Pablo Fornals is a special player who is often underrated.
In a game where West Ham needed top players he was a shining light. His attitude, application and energy was the driving force.
Andriy Yarmolenko was a class act after coming on late in the second half.
He moved with experience and reacted well to score the second goal of the night.
