Newcastle United have been rocked by an injury and 'psychological blow' after Monday night's Premier League meeting against Chelsea. The Magpies could be without star man Anthony Gordon for upcoming meetings with West Ham and Fulham.

Eddie Howe's side lost 3-2 at Stamford Bridge as the Blues closed the gap between themselves in 11th and the visitors in 10th to just one point in the Premier League table. Newcastle United's second defeat in three is a worry for the club but attention after the game turned to the fitness of key player Gordon.

The England international appeared to be struggling with a niggle early on in the match, having signalled to the Magpies bench that he needed a medic to assess his problems. Gordon grimaced as he was tended to by physiotherapists and was soon hooked from the game after just 30 minutes.

Speaking after the match, Howe said: "He is in a bit of pain and we fear it is not looking too good but it is very early days. That was a huge moment in the game to lose him then. He has been so good for us this season and so consistent. That is another psychological blow for the players.

"I think it (Gordon's knee pain) was quite early on in the game. But as I said, there was no moment where he felt an injury, just the pain was there. So we sent someone over because he didn't look like he was moving right. And then eventually he succumbed to the injury.

In a season when Newcastle United have been plagued by injuries, Gordon has stepped up to the plate to star for the club. The former Everton man has nine goals and six assists in the top flight and has featured in every league outing apart from the trip to West Ham in October, when he was suspended.

The injury blow comes ahead of a potential England call-up for Gordon, who could now miss a number of matches if the injury worry is as serious as Howe appeared to fear. Newcastle United face London sides West Ham, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur before the middle of April.

The Hammers travel to St James' Park on March 30 before Fulham welcome Newcastle United to Craven Cottage on April 6. Spurs then play in Tyneside on April 13.
