West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen says West Ham fans were “right to voice their concern” after the Hammers were booed off at half time in their 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

Bowen provided the assist for West Ham’s only goal but the former Hull City summed up the performance as “embarrassing”.

Callum Wilson and Joelinton had fired the Magpies 2-0 in front after just 13 minutes but hope was restored before half time as Kurt Zouma headed home from Bowen’s corner.

However, a Nayef Aguerd error 22 seconds into the second half gifted Wilson with his second before a mis-timed clearance from Lukasz Fabianski provided Alexander Isak with an open goal eight minutes from time.

As the goalkeeper rushed out of his penalty area, a mis-kick left Isak with the chance to control and lob the ball in from 30 yards. Joelinton then got his second as he beat Zouma and fired past Fabianski in stoppage time.

The result leaves West Ham on 27 points, and only outside of the bottom three on goal difference. Bowen is confident West Ham will be backed by a big following at Fulham on Saturday, and wants to provide the supporters with something to cheer about.

He said: “Fans were right to voice their concern. We take that on chin from the fans, we are a family at this club, we don’t want to put out results like that. On Saturday they will travel in numbers, it’s up to us to show a performance.”

On the performance, he added: “We started well, but then conceded two easy goals, we shot ourselves in the foot against a team fighting for top four. The position we are in, we can’t give away these easy goals.

“It’s an embarrassing performance at the end of the day, there’s nothing positive to take out of it. It was a massive game coming off Sunday, so it is disappointing.

“We’ve got to feel that it hurts tonight, we have another game on Saturday so we have to turn hurt into joy. It’s too late in season to brush things under the carpet, we are in this position and have to face it head on.”
