West Ham star undergoes surgery as World Cup hopes left in doubt

One West Ham star is now said to be facing a race against time to return for the World Cup.

One West Ham-owned player now faces a race against time to keep his World Cup dream alive following an injury. This summer’s World Cup is now just months away, and we are getting to the nervy stage of the season where players know that any injury could have an impact on whether they are fit enough for the summer tournament, or whether it could cost them a spot in their respective national team’s squad.

It’s a tough mindset to manage for players, who will want to give everything to achieve their club goals while also keeping that huge opportunity of playing at a World Cup at the back of their mind.

For West Ham star Edson Alvarez, this summer is a special one. Mexico will play their group stage games, and potentially others, at home in this World Cup, with Mexico serving as co-hosts, along with the USA and Canada.

Alvarez will have the chance to not only represent his country at a World Cup, but also to captain them.

But in a potentially huge blow, he has picked up a serious ankle injury while on loan with Fenerbahce, and the injury has required surgery, which has now been completed.

Alvarez has made 17 appearances across all competitions for the Turkish side this season, but he will now be battling to make the end of the season, and indeed the all-important World Cup. Given the credit he has in the bank with his national team. Alvarez will be assured of a play if he is fit, but he will need to avoid any setbacks.

Alvarez struggled with West Ham after arriving on a £35million deal from Ajax, but he may yet have a future with the club, given Nuno Espirito Santo will want a look at him in the summer, especially if he keeps the Iron up. Relegation would likely mean the midfielder finds a new club on a permanent basis, given his value and salary.
