Tottenham now interested in 'commendable' six-time league winner who could cost just £17m

Tottenham are being linked with an experienced midfielder ahead of the deadline.

Tottenham are now said to be interested in a deal to sign a six-time league winner as they look to strengthen this month. Spurs now face a race against time to get players in, with less than a week to go until the January window deadline.

Thomas Frank’s men defeated Eintracht Frankfurt to progress to the Champions League Round of 16 without the need for a playoff on Wednesday night, but they have so far failed to replicate their European form in the Premier League.

Frank has come under serious pressure due to his side’s poor domestic form, leaving them in the bottom half. Tottenham have been bombarded with injuries over the last few weeks, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison ruled out for months, while Pedro Porro will be missing for a few weeks.

Conor Gallagher has been brought in to help the midfield, but the front line has been left looking particularly thin after Brennan Johnson was sold, while Dejan Kulusevski is yet to return from a long injury layoff.

Tottenham seem to be concentrating on the signing of Liverpool veteran Andy Robertson, but they need more help at the top end of the pitch. There is little concrete news on that front, but there has been a fresh report of interest in another midfielder.

Goretzka interest

Despite the signing of Gallagher, Tottenham are being linked with a move for Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka, who has won six Bundesliga titles, a Champions League and many other titles with the club. The 30-year-old is out of contract this summer, and could be available on a cheaper deal now.

While no contract is agreed, Tottenham and other interested clubs outside of Germany are free to agree a pre-contract ahead of the summer. Matteo Moretto has reported that Tottenham are hoping to rival Atletico Madrid for a deal, and that Bayern will make a decision over Goretzka’s future in the coming hours.

Bayern will have to decide whether to offer the experienced midfielder a new contract, and if they decide not to, they will need to decide whether to sell him now or lose him for free this summer. Reports claim that if Bayern sell this month, a deal worth between £17million and £18million should be enough to strike an agreement.

Kompany on Goretzka

Speaking this week, Bayern boss Vincent Kompany said he would be looking at the Goretzka situation. He said: “Starting tomorrow, I can look into what information is available. That’s part of the transfer window. Now it’s about what’s right for Leon, FC Bayern, and the team.”

Bayern sporting chief Max Eberl said of the midfielder last year: “The way he works in training and delivers when he's out on the pitch is commendable. Today he rewarded himself with two goals. He is an important player for us"
