Tottenham 'ready' to pull trigger on transfer to beat Premier League rivals to £21m deal

Tottenham are set to press ahead with their plan to land an up and coming American.

Tottenham are said to be pushing ahead with plans to sign USMNT international Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. Spurs are off to a disappointing start this season, but they remain within three points of the top four and they still carry plenty of hope of turning things around and achieving their pre-season goal of obtaining Champions League qualification.

But pressure is building on Ange Postecoglou, who needs to get his Spurs players singing from the same hymn sheet. There are reports of rifts in camp, and with pressure already high on Postecoglou, the Australian needs to find a remedy.

In the meantime, plans will continue to form for January and the next summer window, with recruitment processes forever ongoing. In fact, Tottenham already started planning for the future by agreeing a clever clause with Real Betis when it comes to American midfielder Cardoso.

When Spurs sold Giovani Lo Celso to Betis, they are said to have agreed a deal with the Spanish club where they would get the first right of refusal on Cardoso should clubs come calling for his services.

It’s claimed Tottenham have an option to sign Cardosa for £21million, and Football Insider say they have already decided they want to activate the option in the not too distant future. With Spurs having the inside track on the deal, they will be able to beat other linked clubs like Aston Villa, adding quality and depth to their midfield, with Cardosa still only 23 years of age and developing quickly, being a regular for Betis.

What Cardosa has said about his future

Cardosa said of his future leading into last summer: “My head and my goals are in Betis. I arrived a short time ago. I want to continue working and evolving. My head is in Betis and the other things are for my agents.”

He added: “I didn’t expect such a quick adaptation. I’m very happy. With my teammates, with the coaching staff, with the club, who helped me a lot. I still have a lot to continue evolving and within the club too.”
