The wait to have James Maddison back on the field is almost over with Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou confirming the midfielder has trained all week and has a chance of making his comeback against Manchester City tomorrow night in the FA Cup.

The England international was one of the best players in the league before his ankle injury against rival Chelsea forced him to sit out the last two and half months. Signed from Leicester in the summer for £40million, Maddison provided six assists and scored three goals before being forced out.

Asked if he could play a part tomorrow night, Spurs boss Postecoglou said: "Team news, from the last game everyone is ok. Deki [Dejan Kulusevski] has recovered. The boys had four days off last week.

"Madders (Maddison) has been training with us, he had a full training week. Ben [Davies] and Dane Scarlett have just started with the group. Gio [Lo Celso], Manor [Solomon] and Alejo [Veliz] are the only ones still away from it."

Manchester City were hoping to have Erling Haaland back after he returned to training this week but their manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the game will come too soon for his Norwegian striker.

The City boss told reporters: "He is on the verge of coming back. Tomorrow he is not ready but he is close. Training camp was good, he trained in some sessions, the last few days here he trained, but it is not perfect and we will wait a little bit more."

Last season's treble winners have not won a game at the Tottenham Stadium since Spurs moved there in April 2019.
