The attacker has made 17 Premier League appearances this season, and is yet to score a goal.

Tottenham will be looking ahead to next season after what has been a disappointing year for Ange Postecoglou’s side. They sit 12th in the Premier League table, 13 points away from the Champions League places, which was likely the club’s aim before the season started. They play against Ipswich Town this weekend hoping to earn their third league win in a row.

Tottenham have had several injury concerns in attack this season with the likes of Dominic Solanke, Richarlison and Brennan Johnson all dealing with issues. However, they did add Mathys Tel, who they can sign permanently for £50m in the summer.

If they decide to do so, it could mean that they see a fellow striker depart after what has been an unsuccessful loan spell in North London.

Tottenham reveal transfer stance on Timo Werner

Timo Werner signed for Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig during the 2024 January transfer window. His deal at the club is set to expire in June, which gives Tottenham the choice whether to sign him permanently for £10 million. However, since joining Tottenham, Werner has scored just three goals in 40 games, and has struggled to get a regular run in Postecoglou’s starting XI.

According to a report by German outlet BILD, Tottenham have decided against paying the £10m buy option for Werner, and he will head back to the Bundesliga after a year-and-a-half in London. The German had previously been at Premier League rivals Chelsea, where he also struggled to find consistent form, and will now be looking at a new challenge for next season.

Werner’s future remains very uncertain seeing as his contract at Leipzig expires in June 2026, meaning that the German club will likely want to sell him this summer in order to avoid letting him leave as a free agent in 2026. The report includes that it could lead to the sale of Werner to another Red Bull-owned club. Leeds United are one such club, but a more likely move for Werner would be to the MLS to join New York Red Bulls.

Tottenham identify £43m Werner replacement

If Spurs decide to let Werner leave in the summer as the report suggests, they will likely sign at least one striker in order to replace him ahead of next season.

One player that has been linked with a move to North London is Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, who has experience playing in the Premier League with Everton, although he struggled at the time. Kean is currently the second-top scorer in the Serie A with 15 goals, and he has a £43m release clause attached to his contract, meaning that Spurs could sign him without obstacle if they wanted to pay the fee.

Arsenal have also been linked with signing the 24-year-old, who seems to have found his best form this season at Fiorentina. In other news, a former Arsenal and Manchester United star has landed his first major managerial role.
