Tottenham Hotspur could hijack a transfer move for a Manchester United target in the January window.

Manchester United have long been linked with a move for Jean-Clair Todibo - however, their efforts could be in vain, as Tottenham Hotspur have also entered the mix as they vie for his signature in the January transfer window.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Todibo will cost any club who wishes to sign him a fee of around £35-£40 million. So far this season, Todibo has made 14 appearances in Ligue 1, notching up a single assist along the way. He has yet to score a goal in the current campaign, however.

Todibo currently plays for OGC Nice in Ligue 1. Jim Ratcliffe also owns a stake in Nice, which would streamline a deal for him to join United - but Spurs appear to have the edge as things stand.

How would Tottenham benefit from signing Jean-Clair Todibo?

Todibo is the archetypal modern central defender. Not only is he technically sound, possessing a wide range of passing, he can also back this up with strong physical attributes. He is powerful in the air and is also very quick, making him extremely well-rounded. Nice also have the sternest defence in Ligue 1 this season, conceding just nine goals over the course of 16 league games.

Spurs currently have something of a selection nightmare at the back. Summer signing Micky Van de Ven is out with an injury and they have struggled in his absence - bringing a player akin to Tobido to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be a great way to add quality depth in his position.

Additionally, Tottenham are also looking to sell Eric Dier in the January window. Should he leave the club, it will leave them even shorter of options at the back than they already are - further driving home the need to sign a new centre-back.
