Tottenham prospect sees starting XI route open at loan club up as international centre back makes exit
Alfie Dorrington could be in for more minutes at Aberdeen over the back end of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Alfie Dorrington could be set for a boost on his loan spell at Scottish outfit Aberdeen as the club confirms a loan exit this week.
Aberdeen have seen Slobodan Rubežić head to FK Novi Pazar on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. The 24-year-old had been a mainstay in defence for the Dons this term but has had competition for minutes from Dorrington.
Now, it appears that Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is more keen to deploy the Spurs teenager with Rubežić heading out the door, just a year-and-a-half after he joined the club from the Serbian SuperLiga outfit.
Spurs youngster impressing in Scotland
Thelin said: “Slobodan’s professionalism and application since our arrival has been exemplary however, he now believes it is the right time for him to return to Serbia in search of regular game time. We would like to wish him well during his time at his former club.”
Dorrington made his first team debut for Tottenham Hotspur against Southampton in the Premier League in December and is an exciting prospect for the future at just 19 years of age. He was also an unused substitute against Tamworth in the FA Cup and signed his first professional contract with the club in 2023 - keeping him at Spurs until 2026.
Speaking as the loan signing of Dorrington was announced in January, Thelin said: “Alfie is a really exciting young prospect who recently made his debut for the Tottenham Hotspur first team. He has good speed, stature and good ability on the ball and his arrival will further strengthen our options at centre-back.
“We believe this will be an environment in which he can continue to grow and gain some invaluable match experience in a really competitive league.”
Dorrington welcomed at Aberdeen
The defender has already made four appearances for the club, three in the Scottish Premiership and one in the Scottish FA Cup. Aberdeen have lost all three matches that the Spurs youngster has played in as they endure a tricky run of form, despite sitting fourth in the table.
On signing for Aberdeen, Dorrington said: “It’s amazing to finally be here. Everyone has been so welcoming; it feels like home already. I know it’s a big Club with a lot of history and the supporters are really passionate so it was a no brainer for me.
“As soon as I spoke to the manager and heard about what he wants to achieve here I just wanted to get up here as soon as possible. I believe the way he wants to play will suit my style and he just wants this to be the best part of my career.
“It’s my first loan so I want to start as many games as I can, work hard and I hope I can repay the faith the manager has shown in me.”
