Tottenham picked up a big three points at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday as they look to put a slow start behind them. Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke saw off the Red Devils, who were reduced to 10 men with the score at 1-0 just before half-time.

Fernandes was sent off - perhaps harshly - for a high tackle on James Maddison, but not before Micky Van de Ven ran the length of the pitch before providing a perfect pass for Brennan Johnson to tap the ball home.

Spurs made it two within two minutes of the restart when Johnson’s deflected pass found Dejan Kulusevski, who reacted brilliantly to finish with a jumping flick. Ange Postecoglou’s men capped the win with a third when Dominic Solanke tapped home from a corner after an Ismaila Sarr flick.

Vicario - 8

A big save on Rashford early on and denied Zirkzee with good reactions around 20 minutes in. He didn’t have too much to do, but he took care of business.

Destiny Udogie (Off at 45’) - 6

Got forward well to link up with Werner, but did leave too much space for Garnacho at times. Picked up a knee injury in the first half, and despite carrying on initially, he was withdrawn at half-time.

Micky Van de Ven (Off at 80’) - 10

An unbelievable run to set up the opener. Four or five United players tried to catch him and couldn’t. He also made up ground rapidly to cut out a number of United attacks, especially in the first half. Monstrous.

Cristian Romero - 8

A strong performance in the middle of the Tottenham defence. Played some lovely passes into the midfield and front-line, too.

Pedro Porro - 8

Made life very difficult for Rashford on the right-hand side, matching him for pace and defending well. Porro switched to the left after Spence came on, and didn’t have an awful to do with United not having a winger on the right due to the red card. Mount played on the right side of a midfield but was narrow. Porro wasn’t as much of a threat going forward, but he didn’t need to be with Spurs ahead for most of the game.

Rodrigo Bentancur - 8

Kept Spurs ticking over in the middle, offering protection to the back line, particularly in the first half.

James Maddison (On at 77’) - 9

A danger throughout, drawing fouls aplenty, including the red card. United couldn’t defend him and resorted to fouls instead. A very strong display.

Dejan Kulusevski - 8

Operated well in the first half and scored with a lovely finish on the jump just two minutes after the break.

Brennan Johnson (Off at 77’) - 8

Arrived at the right place at the right time to tap home the opener. He also hit the post just before the 20-minute mark with a good effort. Johnson ran Dalot ragged and provided the assist for the second with the help of a deflection.

Timo Werner - 6

Missed a huge one-on-one chance to make it 2-0 around six minutes from the break, and he also saw a good chance denied by Onana with the score at 2-0. He was dangerous and a threat, but Werner needs to be more clinical in front of goal.

Dominic Solanke - 8

Linked up play well, receiving to his feet and bringing in the wingers. He wasn’t a big threat in behind, but with the way United defended him, Solanke dragged defenders in and opened up space for the wide man. He capped a solid display with a close range finish with 12 minutes remaining.

Substitutions

Djed Spence (On at 45’) - 6

Played on the right after coming on, with Porro moving to the left. Defended Garnacho well. He did lose Casemiro once to concede a chance.

Ismaila Sarr (On at 77’) - 6

Got a nice flick on from a corner to create the Solanke goal.

Mikey Moore (On at 77’) - 6

Didn’t really get into the game, with the result already sealed and Spurs sitting back, content with what they had. He did have a good long shot right at the death that whistled just wide of the top right corner.

Lucas Bergvall (On at 77’) - 6

The same as above.

Radu Dragusin (On at 80’) - 6

Lost Hojlund once and almost gave up a chance, but it would be harsh to dock a point from his rating given he had just come into the game at centre-back, going up against Hojlund, who had been on the pitch for a little longer.
