'Why not?' - Mauricio Pochettino addresses 'unfinished' claim and Tottenham return possibility

Tottenham Hotspur’s greatest period of stability was when Mauricio Pochettino was the man in charge, but could he return to the hot seat again?

There is never a dull day supporting Tottenham Hotspur with Mauricio Pochettino overseeing a period in the club’s history when untold glory was within touching distance.

If Daniel Levy wonders why he isn’t universally loved by Spurs fans, the perceived failure to build from a position of strength and the removal of the much-loved former manager are probably the two biggest reasons.

A Champions League win would have changed the club forever and having to watch Leicester City hold aloft the Premier League trophy will always be a painful one.

Mauricio Pochettino on returning to Tottenham

Things could, and should have been different under the Argentine boss had he been given the players that would have got him over the line and there is a feeling that the current USA boss still has unfinished business at Spurs. Speaking to talkSPORT, Pochettino feels that there is no reason why he can’t return in the future and why challenging at the top of the table couldn’t be a realistic proposition: “Maybe it's possible, yes.

“What is my challenge in the future, of course, after the World Cup and being now focusing on the national team, USA national team is maybe to come back one day to the Premier League. We were so close, we thought we had to win the Premier League and the Champions League. In that case, we wanted to win the Premier League and the Champions League, because in that case, Tottenham is a club that deserves this type of titles, this type of trophies.

“And yes, why not one day to come back to the Premier League? For me, the Premier League is the best league in the world, the most competitive. And yes, I don't say that it's an unfinished show, but I think why not to have the possibility again to challenge and to be involved in the Premier League and to challenge for the big things.”

What do Spurs need to go to the next level?

Thomas Frank has brought stability back to Spurs and he has been backed in the summer even if he doesn’t quite have the depth of quality that Pochettino had at his disposal. There is no reason why he can’t lead his side in a title race given how tight the Premier League has been this season. As with during Levy’s tenure though, there needs to be investment into the squad.

If Spurs want to challenge at the top of the table, they need to sign players who would get into the starting XI of Arsenal, Man City or Liverpool. It should be one of the questions that the recruitment team asks when it is considering potential targets.

This isn’t just for one or two players either, it should be for players who might only make it to the bench. If a player on Arsenal, Man City or Liverpool’s bench would get into the Spurs starting XI, something isn’t right.
