'Always a chance' - Tottenham offered hope to re-sign Harry Kane amid contract clause

Tottenham could get the chance to re-sign Harry Kane sooner than they would have expected.
Tottenham could get the opportunity to re-sign Harry Kane sooner than expected, with the striker’s contract situation not particularly clear. Kane joined Bayern in 2023 and has not disappointed, firing the German giants to the Bundesliga title last season, scoring 65 goals in 65 league games during his time in Bavaria so far.
Kane is now 32 years of age, and given how close he is to the all-time leading Premier League goalscoring record, there is always going to be speculation over a possible return. The striker has scored 213 Premier League goals, with Alan Shearer the leader wit 260, putting the former Tottenham man 47 goals short which is, at best, two season’s worth of Premier League football without too many games missed through injury.
Given the striker’s age, that puts a clock on a return to the Premier League, but Kane has also been very clear that the record is not the most important thing to him. Responding to criticism from Michael Owen over his move to Germany, Kane said this week: “I heard it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've spent a bit of time with him but don't know him well. Obviously, he is a Premier League great and an England great as well, so I'll respect him as a person, but ultimately as he will know, everyone's career is different - everyone's decisions and motivations are different.
“I know he was insinuating I went just for the trophy, but it was to be at the highest level for as long as possible, and I'm really happy in that sense of playing big games, title runs, big Champions League matches, Club World Cup quarter-final. I feel I'm improving as a player, I'm pushing my limits as a player in terms of goalscoring. It's hard not to hear things these days, but the decisions are best for me and I'm really happy that I made that decision and very happy at Bayern Munich now.”
But all that aside, it seems Bayern are already thinking about life after Kane, which could mean Tottenham get a chance to re-sign Kane sooner than they would have expected. Journalist Raphael Honigstein told TalkSPORT: “People in Germany do not expect Harry Kane to see out his career at Bayern necessarily. There was always a chance, and I think Bayern are braced for the possibility that he will leave perhaps slightly earlier than his contract.
“His contract runs until 2027, so one way or the other I think both he and the club need to take a view on this fairly soon, and the fact that they were pushing for somebody who can be both a backup and understudy for Kane tells its own story.”
He added: “They looked at Sesko, they looked at Woltemade, and they ended up with Jackson on an obligation which is kind of a soft buy. That suggests Bayern are aware of the possibility that Kane might go in a year or two, so they need to plan for the future. But at the same time, he is so good that anyone who comes in, and I would put Jackson firmly in that bracket, would have to play around Kane rather than really compete. There is absolutely no chance that Jackson will displace Kane, he would only play alongside him, ahead of him, or step in if Kane misses a game or two. He is very much there to be the backup and maybe the eventual successor, but we are still some way off that.”
Spurs have an option of first-refusal when it comes time for Kane to leave Bayern, and they will surely be keeping an eye on the situation given the veteran striker is likely to be available for a good price whenever he departs Bavaria.
