Tottenham Hotspur have shared the club's 'delight' at triggering a new contract agreement with winger Son Heung-min this week ahead of the Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
The 32-year-old has made 431 appearances for Spurs since joining in 2015 and cemented his status as a club legend. Son's current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was set to expire at the end of the season but the forward has seen a clause triggered to keep him at the club until the summer of 2026.

The captain has just seven goals and six assists so far this season under Ange Postecoglou but remains a vital part of the side.
Spurs ‘delighted’ to announce new Son contract
In a statement released on Tuesday, Spurs said: "We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.
"Having joined the Club in August, 2015, Sonny, 32, has become a global star during his time with us and a modern-day great for Tottenham Hotspur. Since joining from Bayer Leverkusen almost a decade ago, our number seven has gone from strength to strength in Lilywhite, making 431 appearances – seeing him to 11th in our all-time appearances list – and scoring 169 goals – the fourth most in the Club’s history.

“Named Club captain in August, 2023, the South Korea international has certainly cemented himself in our history, scoring a number of iconic goals on landmark occasions for the Club."

Liverpool yet to reach Mohamed Salah breakthrough
Next up is the visit of Liverpool to North London in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. The two sides played out that fixture last month in the Premier League with the Reds romping to a 6-3 win in a thriller.
Arne Slot's side will go into the match as favourites, even with Spurs buoyed by the contract boost. That deal with Son could drive feelings of envy from the Liverpool camp too with huge question marks still over the future of Mohamed Salah.

Just like Son was, the Egypt international is out of contract at Anfield come the end of the season but the club are yet to reach a new deal to keep their talisman at the club. Salah has readily provided cryptic answers to questions over his future, sparking rumours of a departure from Liverpool.

Liverpool don’t have the luxury of an automatic option to trigger an extension to Salah’s deal, highlighting the importance of personal discussions with the player. The Premier League title chasers also face negotiations with key stars Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the defensive duo two other first team members approaching the end of their current deals.
