Tottenham are already said to have made a decision on the future of one of their current players.

Tottenham picked up another big win over the weekend, thrashing Ipswich Town to take another small step towards the top half of the table. Ange Postecoglou’s men are now six points off the top half, but they face a much trickier task on Wednesday, going up against Manchester City.

Postecoglou may have eased the pressure for now, but he is in no way guaranteed to be in charge next season, with more improvement and a consistent run of results needed if he is going to keep his job.

But whether Spurs keen the Australian or not, they will already be doing some squad planning for the summer, with more quality and depth needed if they are to challenge for the top four. There will also be decisions to make about current players, and that includes Timo Werner, who is on loan from RB Leipzig with a low option to buy worth £8.5million.

Though, while that is a tempting fee, Werner has struggled this season, scoring just once and assisting only three goals in 26 games across all competitions. There have been times when even Postecoglou has called out Werner, including after the Europa League draw with Rangers when the Spurs boss hooked the forward at half-time.

He said after the game: "When you've got 18-year-olds [in the squad], it [that performance] is not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo, he's a German international."

According to Bild, Tottenham will not move to sign Werner permanently, with the report claiming the forward’s return to Leipzig is almost certain. The problem for Werner is that he is not wanted at Leipzig, either, and it’s reported a move to MLS could be on the cards.

It’s reported he could join Leipzig’s sister club New York Red Bulls, joining up with former teammate Emil Forsberg, who told Bild recently: “Of course I would love to take Timo. He’s a great player. We had great years in Leipzig. But unfortunately, I can’t make that decision.”

Interestingly, NYRB do only have two designated players at this point, so they would be able to sign a high-earning player like Werner this summer if nothing changes between now and then. The MLS season kicked off this weekend.
