Tottenham told to consider three midfielders after Morgan Gibbs-White, including ex-Aston Villa star
Tottenham’s search for a new holding midfielder could well come down to three players.
Tottenham may well have three standout options as they look to strengthen the holding midfield role. Thomas Frank will want to add a starting-calibre holding midfielder this summer as he looks to get his squad Champions League-ready.
Spurs have been busy this week, wrapping up the signing of West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus for a reported fee of around £55million, and they have also snatched Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White for around £60million, which is another statement signing.
Big spending was always going to be likely this summer after such a disappointing campaign of last, and the holding midfield role may well be the next area addressed. According to James Trembath, Tottenham’s holding midfield search will come down to three main options.
He said on the latest Tottenham podcast: “It's certainly a position that spurs need to look to address in the in the summer, as we've spoken about previously . We've got Archie Gray - Thomas Frank tried to sign at Brentford ironically. He will be a candidate for that position but obviously he's very young, he's very raw and still sort of playing his trade and learning that Premier League.
“There are three key candidates, I think, for the for that six role. I mean, the ideal scenario would be would be Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, but obviously he's going to be big money, I mean, you know they're talking 100 million potentially, which is crazy money. He's a heck of a talent and he's taken the Premier League by storm, hasn't he? But getting him out of Crystal Palace would be very, very difficult, so I think then we're looking at the more realistic Premier League proven and experienced options.
“That's definitely something that Spurs should be looking at this summer. Joao Palhinha, former Fulham midfielder now at Bayern Munich, he hasn’t really played too much there, but he’s a real good ball-winning midfielder, a robust Premier League player. He made a big difference in the Premier League when he was with Fulham and there's talk he might be available. He'd be an excellent addition to Spurs to really add some steel and some grit to that that holding role in front of the back four.
“Then you've got Douglas Luis. He’s a real curious case this one. He was very, very good at Aston Villa, went off to Juventus and hasn't really played too much. There's a lot of talk he will be available and interestingly, Juventus have been linked with Bissouma as well. If there was a swap deal to be done, that'd be a real perfect signing for Spurs. I think Douglas Luis would be available for a reasonable price even if it was a loan move with an option to buy. That really would add a add a layer to that midfield and bolster that position. So, yeah, three three key players there in my opinion. Let's see what gets done.”
