Tottenham and Chelsea told price of defender Xabi Alonso believes will reach the top
Chelsea and Tottenham now know how much they will have to pay to land an in-demand defender.
The end of the January transfer window is now coming into sight, and both Chelsea and Tottenham are on the lookout for new recruits. Spurs have been decimated by injuries this season, leading to an ongoing slide down the table that has them as low as 15th in the Premier League table.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are back in the top four after arresting their winter slide on Monday night, but they are also keen to strengthen as long as they can find the right kind of deals, largely concentrating on exits this month.
One player who is reportedly attracting interest from both sides this month is Eintracht Frankfurt star Piero Hincapié. The 23-year-old is a versatile defender who can play at both centre-back and left-back. He has been a key player for Leverkusen over a successful run in recent years, racking up 101 league appearances.
SportBild claim Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in a deal for the defender, though the timing is not ideal, with Hincapie having penned a new contract only last month, with the new deal lasting up until 2029.
On top of that, the defender is happy in Germany, according to the report, and Leverkusen have already named their price to consider a sale. Leverkusen are said to want £59.1million to sell, and that would be a huge investment for either Chelsea or Spurs, though the former could save money compared to Marc Guehi, who is likely to cost £70million or more. In any case, a summer deal appears more likely for both clubs now that the high price tag has been named.
Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso said of Hincapie this week: “Piero is a key player for us . He is making progress in terms of football, but also in terms of personality. He is no longer the young man who arrived at Bayer Leverkusen four years ago. We are very happy to help him in this process of growth , to accompany him and then where he will end up, I have no idea,"
