Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is ahead of schedule and is pushing to return to first-team training after his knee injury that ruled him out for most of last season and all games so far this campaign.

Manager Ange Postecoglou had told the press the midfielder was eager to return even though he would not get back into the first team until November as Spurs look to ensure they handle the situation as best as they can.

The Spurs boss said: “He’s ticking all the boxes so far. He’s really keen. He came to see me yesterday wanting to train and within a minute I had one of the medical team running behind him to collar him and drag him out.

“He’s definitely keen and it’ll be great to get him back because his contribution when he first came to the club was outstanding. In many respects, he’ll be like another new signing for us, which is great, but we won’t rush it.

“It’s obviously a significant injury so probably looking around that time scale.”

Postecoglou has a big decision to make when Bentancur returns because Pape Matar Sarr has formed a formidable working midfield with new signing James Maddsion and the rejuvenated Yves Bissouma.

The trio have helped the team to their best start to a Premier League season in the last decade with three wins and one draw in their first four games.

They are now expected to beat Sheffield United before taking on Arsenal in the keenly awaited north London derby.
