Former Tottenham Hotspur star Chris Waddle has been tipped for a return to football at the ripe age of 62, amid injury crisis at one of his ex clubs.

Hallam FC in Sheffield, who compete in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, have a hefty list of injuries at the moment and it’s believed that Waddle would not need much convincing to lace up his boots once again and muck in to help out the last club he played for.

Sheffield football journalist Alan Biggs recently admitted he had been told there is a chance of the former Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle and Spurs playmaker coming out of retirement and returning to Hallam.

“Understand there is a strong possibility of Chris Waddle returning to semi-pro football two months short of his 63rd birthday,” Biggs wrote on Twitter. “Hallam FC will consider sending an SOS to the ex-Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield Wednesday and England star amid a chronic run of injuries.

“Waddle is a friend of Hallam FC (step nine in the pyramid) and it’s believed will not need too much encouragement. Never really hung up his boots — Hallam have at least six players out with serious injuries. Had to play with 10 men after the latest tonight.”

Waddle joined Spurs in 1985 from Newcastle and dedicated five years of his career to the club, notching more than 130 appearances. He went on to play for a long list of other clubs before retiring in the early 2000s after signing for non-league side Stocksbridge Park Steels. Waddle came out of retirement 11 years later to join Hallam — could he be about to do it again, an extra ten years down the line?

The Countrymen are due to take on Coventry United in the FA Vase this weekend on Saturday afternoon.
