Southampton vs Tottenham injury news as 13 ruled out and 3 doubts

A look at the latest injury news ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League clash with Southampton.

Tottenham are back in Premier League action on Sunday when they take on a struggling Southampton side at St Mary’s Stadium. Spurs drew with Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night, leaving them with work to do both in the league and in Europe.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are in the bottom half currently, but while they have injury issues aplenty, they will be expected to see off bottom club Southampton on Sunday. Here we round up all the latest injury news surrounding both teams.

Gavin Bazanu - Out

Russell Martin has said of the long-term absentee: “Gavin had an operation yesterday. He's ruptured his Achilles tendon, so it was as bad as we feared. He will be out for around 9 to 10 months.”

Ross Stewart - Out

Stewart is going to be out until the new year with a calf injury. Martin has said: “Hopefully, he will be available in the new year, but we are just going to have to be really, really understanding of how we can use him. It might be that he becomes a player that can impact games from the bench initially.”

Adam Lallana - Out

The veteran midfielder will be hoping to return from a thigh injury after Christmas. Martin has said: “Adam is out, which is a shame because I think he would’ve loved to have been out on the pitch at [Brighton]. He's going to be [out] a couple of weeks, so he'll probably [miss the] next couple of games, I would’ve thought.”

Jack Stephens - Out (Suspended)

Stephens is suspended following a red card.

Aaron Ramsdale - Out

Ramsdale is close to returning, but this one will come too soon. Martin has said: “Rambo is very close; he may be back for the Liverpool game, but if not, the Fulham game after that.”

Jan Bednarek - Doubt

Bednarek will be in contention, with Martin having said last week: “Jan is touch and go. He was going to play on Wednesday but wasn’t quite right at training so we’re giving it another go and will wait and see tomorrow.”

Ebere Paul Onuachu - Doubt

Onachu could return, with Martin saying last week: “We were hopeful for big Paul to be back, but it looks a bit unlikely and will probably be the Spurs game now.”

Will Smallbone - Out

Smallbone is out long term. “Will is out now for a little bit of time, which is really frustrating and disappointing for us,” Martin has said.

Juan Larios - Out

Larios will not return until after Christmas, and more likely the New Year.

Timo Werner - Fit

There were concerns Werner may have picked up an injury after he was substituted at half-time against Rangers, but Postecoglou said afterwards: “Yeah, yeah (it was tactical), he wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should.”

Gugliemo Vicario - Out

Vicario is out long-term, with Postecoglou saying: “It's not going to be weeks. It'll be months. With surgery, there are certain timelines. I don't like giving timelines so early in the process, as it puts undue pressure on the player... Once he starts getting [on the training pitch], we'll have a clearer idea.”

Richarlison - Out

Richarlison is out until the new year, with Postecoglou explaining: “Richarlison, hopefully, he'll be back in the New Year but, again, similar to Micky (van de Ven), we've got to be careful every step of the way.”

Mikey Moore - Doubt

Moore remains a doubt, due to return from a battle with illness, though it’s unclear when he will be back. Postecoglou has said: “We’re still taking it slowly with him; it’s still probably a couple of weeks before he’ll be ready to get properly back into it.”

Ben Davies - Out

Davies will miss this one with a hamstring injury.

Wilson Odobert - Out

Odobert is out long term with a thigh injury.

Cristian Romero - Out

Postecoglou says he is not sure of the extent of Romero’s injury, but there is speculation that the defender will miss six weeks.

Micky van de Ven - Out

Van de Ven has suffered a fresh setback, with Postecoglou saying: “It's the same side. Whether it's the same one, we've just got to get clarity on whether it's exactly the same spot or a new spot.”
