The dust still hasn’t settled following Tottenham Hotspur’s controversial Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday. The Reds left London empty-handed after being reduced to nine men and having a goal chalked off, plus the heartbreak of an own goal in stoppage time to gift Spurs the three points.

Tottenham banked their fifth win of the season to take them into second place as their form under new manager Ange Postecoglou continues. They are one point behind leaders Manchester City and ahead of rivals Arsenal on goal difference.

Luis Díaz had a perfectly legal goal disallowed but due to “significant human error”, VAR failed to intervene and correct the on-pitch decision to rule it offside. Social media erupted when the PGMOL issued a statement confirming the goal should have stood, and the released VAR audio from the moment in question has also ruffled a lot of feathers.

But that isn’t the end of the fallout from the match. Both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off againts Spurs but the latter, like Díaz’s disallowed goal, has been deemed an incorrect decision upon reflection.

Jota was shown red after two challenges on Destiny Udogie, but ESPN has reported that the Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled the Liverpool winger should not have been booked for the second tackle, and therefore should not have been dismissed from the pitch.

The report stated a five-person panel majority “deemed the decision as incorrect as they felt it did not meet the threshold for a yellow card.”

Jones was given a straight red card for his challenge on Yves Bissouma after an intervention from VAR, but the panel agreed with this verdict. However, the outcome of the match and the two major errors have left Jurgen Klopp frustrated and the boss has called for the fixture to be replayed. The Premier Legaue is not expected to consider this request, though.

“If it would happen again then I think the replay would be the right thing to do, or the ref has the opportunity to bring both coaches together and say ‘sorry we made a mistake but we can sort it, let Liverpool score a goal and we start from there’,” Klopp said during a recent press conference.
