‘My opinion’ - Jurgen Klopp offers alternative solution to replay after Tottenham v Liverpool controversy

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has laid out how he wants to see VAR change after a refereeing blunder wrongly disallowed a Luis Diaz goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The German is still adamant that he wants to see the match replayed but also offered up a long-term solution to prevent such a situation from happening again.

PGMOL issued a statement acknowledging 'serious human error' that led to the wrong call and on Tuesday released embarrassing audio from those making the decision.

Those in charge of VAR suffered from a breakdown in communication and could be heard calling to stop play and correct the decision, but it was ruled that since the match had continued this could not be done.

Klopp said: "In a situation like this - a real, massive mistake with a lot of people involved - correct it in that moment.

"But obviously the people thought that's not what they can do. Fine, then let's do a replay and if it happens next time then give them the chance to do it like this [calling back play] then we don't have that problem [the need for a reply] at least any more."

The Liverpool manager remained adamant that 'a replay would be the right thing' in his press conference today but accepted that it 'probably will not happen'.

In a response to the PGMOL statement on the mistake, Liverpool issued a strongly-worded reply promising to take further action. The club said: "We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

"It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

"That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

"This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again. In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution."
