'Medical booked' - Spurs on verge of 'fabulous' £20m transfer breakthrough

The North London outfit are ready to cash in on the homegrown talent.

Tottenham Hotspur have accepted a bid from Leicester City for midfielder Oliver Skipp ahead of the two sides meeting in their Premier League opener on Monday night.

The news, as reported by the BBC comes as somewhat of a U-turn from Spurs, who had been keen to keep the 23-year-old in North London. Skipp came through the club's academy and was seen as a valuable first team player who helped the outfit comply with the Premier League's homegrown rules.

However, it now appears that the player could make the move to the Foxes as they prepare for a return to top flight action. Leicester City have already sold star midfield man Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea for £30 million while Spurs splashed a similar fee to sign Archie Gray from Leeds United.

The BBC adds that Skipp will undergo a medical with Leicester City on Monday ahead of the move. The player would join former Spurs colleague Harry Winks at the King Power Stadium and become the side's fifth summer signing.

The former England youth star has made 106 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and has just the one goal to his name. That came in a London derby against Chelsea in February 2023.

Skipp, who spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Norwich City and helped the side win the Championship, made 21 Premier League appearances under Ange Postecoglou last term but many of those were cameos.

The midfielder was particularly impressive against Brentford in January with his defensive awareness earning praise from pundit Glenn Hoddle. The former England manager said: “It’s a fabulous bit of defensive work as well. The little ball goes in, Toney’s offside, it’s true he doesn’t attempt to play the ball. He leaves it. But Skipp, his awareness defensively to get that is amazing. He covered the ground, it’s excellent defending.”
